Prerequisites

  1. Newslazer Software: Ensure you have Newslazer installed. You can get it from Newslazer's website.

 

 

  1. Eweka Account: Ensure you have an active Eweka account with valid login credentials. Suppose you don’t, sign up for an Eweka account today.

 

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Open Newslazer:
    • Launch the Newslazer application on your device.
       
  2. Access Settings:
    • Navigate to the settings screen in Newslazer, located in the Options menu.


       
  3. Log In to Eweka: Select Login in the left-side menu and input your Eweka credentials.



 

  1. Test Connection:
    • Click “Check Login” to ensure Newslazer can connect to the Eweka server with the provided credentials.



 

  1. Activate SSL Encryption (optional): Choose “Connection” from the left side menu. Check the “Prefer SSL connections if available” box.


 

  1. Configure Newsgroups:
    • Specify the newsgroups you want to subscribe to. You can use the Newslazer search feature on the main page to search for newsgroups and find articles that interest you.
       
  2. Start Browsing:
    • Once everything is configured, you can begin searching for and enjoying posts from newsgroups.

1. Home Screen and Basic Search

The home screen is your starting point in the NewsLazer browser. From here, you can:

  • Browse Newsgroups: Use the “Latest File Groups” tab for the most recent posts or the “Best File Groups” tab for highly rated posts.



 

  • Global Usenet Search: Enter your search terms in the Global Usenet Search box in the top right. This searches across all available newsgroups. Search results will open in new tabs below the main icon bar.

 

2. Accessing Articles

To access Usenet articles:

  • Double-click a post to open a dialogue box confirming the data transfer. You can also view detailed information about the post.
  • Active Transfers: Click the Transfers button to see the number of active and queued transfers within the red square.



 

  • View Posts: After completion, click the “Download Folder” button to open your default download folder.
    • On Mac/Linux: Files are in the NewsLazer folder inside your main Downloads folder.
    • On Windows 7: C:\Users[user]\Downloads\NewsLazer
    • On Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings[user name]\Downloads\NewsLazer

 

3. Finding Newsgroups to Browse

To browse newsgroups:

  • Click the Newsgroups button at the top to view all available newsgroups.



 

  • Sort Newsgroups: Click the “Newsgroup” bar to sort by name or the “Articles” bar to sort by the number of articles available.

 

  • Search Newsgroups: Use the “Search for:” field to find specific newsgroups by keyword. Filter results by newsgroup size with “Show only newsgroups with at least:” and set the desired number of articles.

 

4. Working with Bookmarks

Manage your bookmarks effectively:

  • Delete Items: Right-click to delete a newsgroup or folder. Note that deleting a folder also removes all contained newsgroups.
  • Add Folders: Right-click at the bottom of the bookmark list and select Add Folder.
  • Add Newsgroups: Click the Newsgroups button, then the (+) icon next to the newsgroup you want to add. Choose the desired folder and click “Ok.” You can also drag and drop newsgroups into the bookmark bar.

 

5. Settings (Preferences on Mac)

Adjust your settings as follows:

  • Login: Enter your username and password to access NewsLazer.
  • Usenet Index: Set download behaviors, and thumbnail settings, and enable the text panel for binary newsgroups.
  • Search: Choose between Usenet search engines and manage your search history.
  • General: Control private data, file system, and user interface settings.
  • Connection: Set speed limits, connection ports, and secure (SSL) connections.
  • Downloads: Manage subfolder creation and handling of PAR2 and RAR files.
  • Import: Enable NZB Auto Import for automatic article access from a specified folder.
  • Scheduler: Set search times for different types of posts.
  • Video: Link to VLC player and set preview settings.
  • Safe Search: Filter out adult content by checking the box.
  • Text: Set default sender information for text newsgroup posts and load options for text headers.

 

6. Jumpstart Your Usenet Experience

Utilize shortcuts by right-clicking items in the main window:

  • Options like “Download,” “Show details,” or “Show Automatic Preview” are available for file groups.
  • For ongoing data transfers, you can cancel or change priority by right-clicking the item.
  • Previews: If available, select “Show Automatic Preview” for video file groups.

 

Recommended Player: For video playback, we recommend using VLC Media Player, which is open-source and compatible with various audio and video formats.
