SABnzbd Speed Tips

If SABnzbd isn't performing as expected, several adjustments can improve its speed and reliability. These tips help fine-tune SABnzbd and your Usenet setup for better performance.

1. Optimize Server Connections

Each Usenet provider allows up to a specific number of connections. Check your provider's settings and match that number in SABnzbd:

  • Navigate to Config > Servers.

  • Select your server entry.

  • Increase the Connections setting to match the number allowed by your provider.

  • Experiment with the number of connections to find the optimal number for the best speeds.

2. Disable IPv6 (If Unstable)

Some Internet connections may experience speed issues when IPv6 is enabled.

  • Go to Config > Special > Switches.

  • Uncheck ipv6_servers (on).

3. Avoid Wi-Fi for SABnzbd

Use a wired Ethernet connection whenever possible. Wi-Fi may cause inconsistent speeds, especially during high-volume transfers.

4. Check Indexer and Automation Delays

Some Usenet Indexers may delay indexing or post-processing, affecting perceived speed. Ensure the automation system is configured to act promptly after an item is posted.

5. Optimize SABnzbd Queue Settings

  • Navigate to Config > Switches.

  • Disable Direct Unpack to reduce CPU usage.

  • Set Pause During Post-Processing to Yes so that SABnzbd processes items after acquisition completes.

  • Enable Only Get Articles for Top of Queue to limit CPU demand when working through large queues.

6. Increase Article Cache (If You Have Enough RAM)

If your system has sufficient memory, increasing the article cache can reduce disk activity and improve processing performance.

  • Navigate to Config > General.

  • Adjust the Article Cache Limit to a higher value based on available RAM.

7. Lower Logging Verbosity

Verbose logging can place unnecessary load on your system.

  • Click the wrench icon on the Status window.

  • In the lower right, change the dropdown to +info if it’s currently set to +Debug.

8. Use SSD Storage

Using solid-state drives (SSD) for both complete and incomplete folders can improve speed. Mechanical hard drives (HDD) or network-attached storage (NAS) may slow down processing.

9. Keep SABnzbd Updated

Always use the latest version of SABnzbd to take advantage of performance improvements and bug fixes.
