Authentication Error 480: What It Means and How to Resolve It

If you receive a 480 Authentication Required error when attempting to access Usenet through Eweka, it typically indicates a login issue. This can be caused by incorrect credentials or a problem with your newsreader setup.

Common Causes of the 480 Error

  1. Incorrect Username or Password
    Double-check the username and password entered in your newsreader. These must match exactly with what was provided during account creation. Avoid copying extra spaces or using auto-fill tools that may insert outdated details.

  2. Account Not Activated
    Make sure your account has been activated through the verification link sent to your email. Access is restricted until this step is completed.

  3. Expired or Suspended Account
    A lapsed payment or support intervention may temporarily restrict access. Log in through the Eweka customer portal to verify account status. If your account is active, there should be a future date in the Next Billing section.

  1. Too Many Simultaneous Connections
    Exceeding your plan’s allowed number of connections may trigger authentication errors. Close extra sessions or reduce the number of connections in your newsreader settings. All Eweka plans include up to 50 connections.

  1. Incorrect Server Settings
    Check that your newsreader is configured with the correct server address and port. For SSL access, use:

    • Server: news.eweka.nl

    • Port: 563 (SSL) or 119 (non-SSL)

How to Fix It

  • Re-enter your login credentials manually.

  • Confirm your account is active and in good standing.

  • Adjust the number of simultaneous connections to match your subscription.

  • Verify all server settings match those recommended by Eweka.

If the problem continues, please contact Eweka Support with a copy of your newsreader log showing the full error message.
